Vicky Jiménez grinds out the win but falls to Pavlyuchenkova

Vicky Jiménez Kasintseva

Vicky Jiménez Kasintseva had a bye in the first round of the Mutua Madrid Open, a WTA 1,000 tournament. The Andorran tennis player was closer than ever to the first victory in a championship of this category, but ended up falling to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, current number 599 in the world and finalist of Roland Garros in 2021 by 1 to 6, 7 to 6 (7-5) and 6 to 7 (7-9).

Jiménez started with nerves and was overtaken by the Russian, who gave him no options, and dispatched the first hose on the fast track with just 27 minutes. Little by little, Jimenez recovered, moving Pavlyuchenkova from side to side. The Russian was ahead for almost the entire set, but the Andorran went from 2 to 4 to 6 to 5.
